A Giveaway (actually 2!) With Katie Dean Jewelry

I’ve been overdosing on Instagram lately. Seriously. Just when I start to wonder if it’s gone to unhealthy extremes, I stumble across a beautiful feed that turns into a new kindred-spirit sister-friend and all my faith in Instagramming as a permanent (necessary) fixture in life is renewed. I met Katie Dean of Katie Dean Jewelry this way only a few short months ago. She left some lovely comments on my pictures, and when I browsed her feed and checked out her shop, I fell in love. She’s sweet as can be, stunningly gorgeous, uber talented and stylish, and has made quite a name for herself in the jewelry world. Her pieces have been worn by all kinds of celebrities and have popped up in shows like Parenthood and Glee! [I passed out a little when I saw them in Parenthood. Tad bit obsessed with that show.] Basically, GO GIRL!!

Katie’s style is such a perfect mix of bold and understated. She creates adorable, on-trend statement pieces as well as chic, delicate basics that you’ll want to live in. I’ve completely fallen for the Wrap Arrow Mid-Ring and the Light As A Feather Earrings as dailies, and when I want to go more playful or edgy, the Wise Warrior Necklace and the Forever & Always Bracelets have become true favorites. [All pictured in this post!]

Outfitted | Ruthie Lindsey

outfitted | Ruthie Lindsey - offbeat + inspired

“Outfitted” is a new series focusing on fashion and style. For each Outfitted post, I’ll be featuring someone I find utterly inspiring. It isn’t just clothing that stands out to me when it comes to personal style, it’s how garments, makeup, footwear, accessories and the like can be curated with careful and thoughtful intention, and then put together to express something deeper about the wearer. What’s communicated is what draws me in. This series will document that. I’m thrilled to devote the inaugural Outfitted post to my dear friend, Ruthie Lindsey of Ruthie Lindsey Design.

Ruthie’s style is relaxed, earthy and “free”. I adore her use of neutrals with unexpected pops of color and texture. She mixes vintage, one-of-a-kind items with solid basics from favorite brands. I love her ability to gather simple pieces and pair them in unexpected ways to create sweet and cohesive looks. There’s surprising beauty and so much to explore within simplicity. New life can be given to old things. Ruthie communicates this sense of freedom, renewal and adventure clearly from head to toe, and I love it!

Holiday Gift Guide + Favorites

Holiday Gift Guide + Favorites - offbeat + inspired

I can’t believe how fast Christmas is coming. I meant to put a gift guide up WEEKS ago, but time flew and now here we are, only 2 weeks out. I decided to mix up this little roundup with some of my absolute must-haves across multiple categories so you can find something for (almost) everyone. I also figured, since time is running low, I might as well illustrate the entire guide. Smart? No, but time management was never my forte and it was fun to make so I hope you like it! Ok, let’s go.

Let’s Talk Denim…

Jeans can be a sore subject for some of us. I come from a tall family and between my two sisters and I, there’s been plenty of griping over bottoms in general being too short, too tight in the hips, too big in the legs and basically unflattering on our pear-shaped selves.

After years of denim-hunting and gathering, I believe I’ve identified the tall-pear-girl jeans problem. Low rise. Not all low rise jeans are bad, but in my experience, most just don’t work in our favor. If it fits in the hips, my legs are swimming, and if it fits in the legs, I can fit another person down the back of my pants. Not fun. Even low rise styles intended for hippy girls that do fit well in the hips and legs still don’t flatter the pear shape. They accentuate hip width, leaving the silhouette bottom-heavy with few redeeming options to balance the look up top.

Oh hey, high waisted jeans! Lovely to meet you!

As with all timeless high rise styles, one of the major benefits they offer is accentuating…you guessed it, the waist. When the band of your jeans sits above the hips, it draws the eye upward, which pronounces a feminine silhouette and complements both the hips and the waist while lengthening the legs. Hello, gorgeous!

Let's Talk Denim... - offbeat + inpired

Styling high waisted jeans is also 10x easier, as you can tuck in almost any top (or if you’re super trendy, work in the cropped styles) and be ready to go. I was having this conversation with my sister and decided to illustrate her in a side-by-side comparison to show the difference waist height can make.

I also took the discussion to my Instagram (@tifforelie), asking for some recommendations on where to find the best high waisted jeans. Here’s what I got back:

@abby_tohine recommends Anthropologie and vintage boutiques.
@rockcandy85 recommends Guess.
@erineliza_ and @littlebirdlee recommend Urban Outfitters’ “BDG High Rise Skinny” — available with a 34″ inseam, score!
@ohmmade recommends J-Brand’s “Maria” and Citizens of Humanity’s “Rocket Skinny Jeans“.

Thanks so much, you stylish gals!!

I also read a blog post just yesterday by the lovely Beth over at Local Milk, featuring the “Elizabeth” high waisted jeans from Imogene + Willie. They look fabulous.

Do you rock high rise jeans? What’s your favorite denim brand? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the curvy girl/jeans conundrum (with links to your favorites if you have them)!

Orchard Style: Flannel + Plaid and a Giveaway with Duluth Trading Co.

Orchard Style: Flannel + Plaid [Featuring Duluth Trading Co.] - offbeat + inspired

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with flannel for a long time. I’ve always loved the rustic and cozy look you can pull together on a moment’s notice with a soft plaid button-up, a good pair of jeans and some leather boots. I’ve always hated that so many of the flannels I’ve tried over the years were either too flimsy, a poor fit, or just completely uncomfortable.

Duluth to the rescue…again. As I mentioned recently in my camera bag post, I met the lovely folks from Duluth Trading Company at this year’s Haven Conference. They had a booth set up with some fabulous leather goods and outerwear for my touching and drooling pleasure. I fell in love with their leather bags instantly, but was more reserved when it came to the flannels and jackets (as I’ve been hurt before…). I assumed that because Duluth’s focus is durability and comfort, the apparel may be lacking in style and fit. I figured the shirts would be boxy, the jackets would be shapeless, and while the materials would be of the highest quality, I expected them to fall flat as part of an outfit intended for going out rather than wood chopping or deer hunting. WRONG.

A Fall Look + A Lovely Giveaway With Acanthus Jewelry

A Fall Look + A Lovely Giveaway With Acanthus Jewelry - offbeat + inspired

I was first introduced to Nichole McIver of Acanthus Jewelry through our mutual friend, Jen Comas Keck — author of Beauty Lies in Strength (a GREAT health and fitness blog). You may notice by the number of jewelry giveaways we’ve hosted so far that I’m a huge fan of handmade wearable trinkets, but I’m also extremely picky. Basically, if something shows up in the form of a feature or giveaway, it’s because we absolutely love it and would (and often do) spend our own money on it. This brings me back to Nichole and Acanthus. When Jen sent me a link to check out Nichole’s work, my jaw dropped. Her creations are such a beautifully unique mix of feminine, edgy, modern, minimalistic and earthy. They have so much character while remaining truly versatile, and the quality and craftsmanship of each piece is out of this world. Needless to say, I could not wait to do this feature, and I’m so excited that she’ll be giving away a $175 gift certificate to one lucky o+i reader AND a special 20% discount code for everyone! Keep reading for an interview with Nichole, a casual autumn look with one of my favorite Acanthus necklaces, and the giveaway/discount details.
