Nashville Trip With Free People + A Magical Backyard Dinner

So I went to Nashville again! There was a #FPme shoot with Free People, a backyard dinner at my sweet friend Ruthie‘s, and of course, lots of catching up, laughing, dancing, friend-making and photographing — basically the norm on my Tennessee adventures! If you haven’t heard of #FPme, it’s Free People‘s own little social hub where girls from all over the world can upload style pics of themselves, tag the outfits with whatever FP goodies they have on and share it in their gallery. (Here’s a link to mine.) It’s great for outfit inspiration and I love that you can click a photo and it brings you directly to the item listing (because, you know…anything to fill that cart as fast as humanly possible). You can also search the hashtag on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to find all kinds of boho style ideas. (I’ve been posting a ton on my Instagram lately!) Anyway! Free People was heading to Nashville and reached out to a few local #FPme contributors about doing a shoot downtown. I’m clearly not a Nashville local, but Dee, the darling gal I’ve been in contact with about FP styling, knew Lexington was nearby and asked if I’d join in for the day. Um, that’s a huge yes! Ruthie had told me Free People was coming down for a dinner at her place, so I was already attending that which made hopping in on the #FPme shoot even more of a no brainer.

We arrived at the store, makeup and hair done, ready to pull pieces for the day. Talk about being in heaven. There was just a handful of us so it was easy to make sure we weren’t wearing the same outfits, and I loved how different, yet undeniably “Free People” we ended up looking. The girls were sweet as can be and I could tell the shoot was going to be a lot of fun. I’m always a little nervous going into situations like that because you’re not guaranteed to be stuck with a bunch of sweethearts. Between trucking around a bustling city in sweltering heat and hours of adjusting bra straps and boot zippers, things get tiring quick and one weird mood can kill the experience. But I seriously had it made with this group.

We started in a small park and took turns warming up to the camera. Jules, one of the official FP photogs and the genius behind FP’s Instagram and blog, told us to be natural. It was amazing how differently we each interpreted that. Some girls worked it like a catwalk, others meandered as if the only thing on their mind was picking wildflowers. Everyone looked gorgeous.

After we finished at the park, we headed downtown. At one point we ran into another group that would be joining us at the dinner that night. You may know them on Instagram as @reallykindofamazing, @benjaminheath and @jaredchambers. They were in town for a shoot with Lincoln, and since we all know and love Ruthie, her house was home base. Seeing them was a lot of fun and we took a little detour to visit and shoot at the Mas Tacos truck outside of Imogene + Willie.

Then Lauren and Garrett (@reallykindofamazing) goofed off with their “matching” body harnesses.

After that, we convened at the Walking Bridge for our final photos.

A stunning view of Nashville’s skyline, brand new friends and the anticipation of a night filled with music, food and all the inspiration you could dream of called for some celebrating.

After that, we headed back to the store, gathered our things and disappeared for a bit to get ready for dinner. I headed straight to Ruthie’s, got changed and jumped in where I could to help set things up. The backyard was already looking magical, so we added flowers.

Beth Kirby was in the kitchen making a galette that has ruined all other galettes for everyone that had a bite. This girl sure found her calling. She used fresh, amazing, out of this world peaches from The Peach Truck…I’m now an addict. I ate my weight in peaches last week.

When things were nearly ready, we found time to rest in the yard for a while and that’s when I learned that half the girls I had been shooting with all day were insanely talented singer/songwriters! The girls took turns with Alyssa’s guitar and captivated all of us.

And then the music. I was indescribably giddy when I found out that Sugar & The Hi Lows would be performing that night. “I’ve Got You Covered” is one of my favorite songs!! AND they performed it. AND these two are entirely adorable in person…not to mention hilarious.

As things grew dim, the atmosphere became even more enchanting. I wove barefoot through the crowded grass, taking pictures and eavesdropping to absorb every bit of the night that I could. There was so much inspiration flowing. I could see it in glowing, laughing faces lit by warm twinkle lights, I could hear it in the steady hum of excited conversation and smell it in the air. Even the hungry mosquitoes couldn’t steal from that moment. We shared life, danced ourselves silly and rode out those final hours until we were too tired to stand. It was good. So good.

Experiencing things like this is so important. If you have a story to tell, a passion to pursue, something that moves you forward…find people to share it with and gather. Gather for dinner, gather for a walk, around a campfire — just gather. Watch what happens when you connect with others who are threaded with the same sense of purpose. It’s such a beautiful thing. Thanks so much to Free People, Ruthie Lindsey, Beth Kirby, Hannah Messinger, James Worsham, The House Nashville, CONSIDERTHEWLDFLWRS and all the others who offered us just that on a warm summer evening in a little East Nashville backyard last week. And here’s to many more!

Question for you. If you were to host or take part in an event like this, what would it look like? What role would you play? I would love to know! [Share even if (and especially if) you’ve never done anything like it before!]

It all sounds ENCHANTING! I’ve been following you, Ruthie, Beth, Courtney, James and many of the others you mentioned for awhile on IG. These gatherings those talented gals put on are SO amazing! I hope to attend the next Kinfolk dinner in Nash later this year.
I think if I were to host one of these events, I would look to make it homey, comfortable and charming- and of course the food would have to be the center- because I feel that great food is the center of a great evening! Any my role? I’d love to host, but would also happily play any role in an evening such as this. To me the important thing is to make sure your guests are well-looked after, comfortable and are enjoying themselves. I’ve worked in TV production for years, so working behind the scenes is always a comfortable place for me to be! Love you blog, love your IG feed and I hop we run across each other one day . xx

    • Aww thank you so much!! You absolutely should attend the next one. You would be in heaven — they’re just SO beautiful. And it sounds to me like you should definitely be putting these on yourself!! For some, making people feel comfortable and welcome just comes naturally. It’s such an amazing thing and I LOVE visiting with people who have that gift!! I’m so so glad you’ve been enjoying the posts and photography, and I’m sure we will meet someday! 😀

  4. Um, this looks like it was an amazing time! I almost participated in the FP contest to go the dinner, but living in Lexington I knew it would be a 3 hour drive to get there. I wish we could do something like this in Lexington, really. We have so many lovely homes and nice parks for candlelit dinners outside! I am so glad you got to have this experience. Now we just need to lobby for a Free People store in Lousiville, Lex, or Cincy!

It WAS amazing! And I completely agree. There are definitely going to be dinners like this in Lex. I’ve been wanting to put some together for a while now and I just know our community would make it stunning! 🙂 And YES, we really do need a FP around here!!
