NYC, Club Des Chefs + A *Really* Cool Oven

Wow. So much has been going on, I don’t even know where to begin! I’m thinking I’ll have to do a proper recap post photo-documented with Instagram pics (because I can’t get enough of that Instagram) to fill you guys in on everything — and then I’ve got a pile of recipes in the blog queue with stashes of photos that still need editing. I’m really excited to get those posted because…cookies. Flatbread. GF/Dairy-free brownies. Vegan ice cream. Yes. For now though, I’ll share the most recent, most exciting thing that will be unfolding over the next few days.

Samsung's Club De Chefs in action - offbeat + inspired

I’m currently in a cab on the way to Edmonton International Airport in Alberta where I’ll be catching a flight to NYC. (I’ll circle back to the reason I was in Edmonton in that upcoming recap post — what an adventure!) In New York, I’ll be attending a campaign launch for Samsung’s new line of kitchen appliances that they’ve created in collaboration with three hugely talented, world-class culinary pros and members of Club Des Chefs. It’s called the Chef Collection and it includes a 4-door refrigerator, a dishwasher, and an oven with “Flex Duo”, which bakes at 2 different temperatures at the same time.

Of course the oven is what caught my attention. I really can’t wait to witness that demonstration because I have a long list of high-temp and low-temp recipes that I could have going simultaneously to save a ton of bake time, especially for dinner/dessert situations. Imagine being able to have flatbread pizzas going at 475 WHILE a batch of chocolate chip cookies is puffing at 350? And the space it would save! When we lived in Somerset, KY a few years ago, we were renting a house with a pretty big kitchen and 2 separate ovens. It was a dream. When we moved into the apartment with the teenie tiny kitchen and a half-sized oven, I was just grateful that my cookie sheets fit inside. The idea of having the function of 2 ovens in the space of 1 has me completely giddy — especially for us small-spacers.

So the next exciting thing about this trip is that I’ll get to chat with the celebrity chefs! I’ve never met a big time chef in my LIFE, so I’m trying to come up with a list of questions I’d ask these guys:

The questions I hope to ask if I can get through all the gawking and drooling in one piece:

– What’s the most rewarding thing about being a pro chef?
– Are you a Food Network fan? What’s your favorite show?
– What’s your favorite dish to prepare for family and friends?
– What’s one pro tip you would give to a home chef?

I’m sure I’ll have more when the time comes, but I’m always curious about what shows the pros are watching and how they incorporate their culinary skills into their personal lives. I would love to trail one of them on their day off. That would be so exciting!!

    What’s the last thing you ate?
    What are your top 3 or 5 pantry staples?
    What’s in your freezer right now?
    What’s your favorite cookbook? (Other than yours if you have one.)
    What do you live by? Some motto or creed.
    Do you prefer white meat or dark meat?
    What’s your favorite cut of beef?
    Do you collect anything that’s from the kitchen? Such as rolling pins, cast iron pans or wine openers. 😉

    Prime Rib and Scalloped Potatoes.
    Cathead Biscuits and Thick-cut Bacon.
