At my house, we typically have a pretty boring beverage selection. If you came over on an average day, you’d have your choice of either coffee or water. Maybe if you’re really lucky, we’ll have a gallon of milk on hand. We’ve had people over for a big homemade dinner only to realize that when I offered them drinks, their exciting options were water or…ummm…water.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I thought it would be the perfect time for a mocktail recipe. (Spoiler alert for my mother-in-law if she’s reading this.) My in-laws are coming over on Sunday and I wanted to make sure my drink selection could hold its own alongside a big homemade Mother’s Day dinner.
I’m not a huge fan of juice-based beverages with all kinds of added sugar. Even when I make a sweet drink, I like to used unsweetened or naturally sweet ingredients and then add my own sugar so I can better monitor the sugar content. This recipe is a mix of orange, lime and cranberry juices with a bit of fresh mint. The cranberry juice I used needs to be sweetened and diluted. If you use a different variety that isn’t as strong, you may need to adjust the amount of sparkling water and simple syrup in the recipe.

Cranberry-Citrus Mocktail with Mint
Yields 2 servings
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of 1 lime
1/4 cup of 100% pure cranberry juice (such as Trader Joe’s 100% cranberry juice)*
1 tablespoon of simple syrup (recipe below)
7-8 mint leaves, torn or roughly chopped
1/2 cup ice
1 1/2 cups sparkling water
Additional mint sprigs or orange slices for garnish
1. Add the orange juice, lime juice, cranberry juice, simple syrup, mint leaves and ice to a cocktail shaker.
2. Shake the mixture vigorously for about 10-15 seconds.
3. Pour the juice mixture evenly into two chilled glasses.
4. Add about 3/4 cups sparkling water to each glass.
5. Add additional ice and garnish with mint leaves or orange slices if desired.
6. Serve and enjoy!
*This recipe takes into account that the Trader Joe’s brand 100% cranberry juice needs to be diluted. If you use a different version of cranberry juice that does not need to be diluted or is artificially sweetened, you will likely need to decrease the amount of simple syrup used or leave it out completely.
2 cups of granulated sugar
1 cup of water
1. In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
2. Add the sugar to the boiling water and stir constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Don’t boil the mixture too long as it will get too thick.
3. Once the sugar is dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture to cool. It will thicken a bit when cooled.
4. When the mixture is cooled, it is ready to be used. This simple syrup recipe will yield much more than you need for the mocktail recipe above. You can bottle the unused simple syrup in a tightly sealed bottle and store it in the refrigerator for about 6 months.
